How do you even find a good therapist?

ok so everyone says "go to therapy" (including me lol) but nobody talks about how hard it is to actually FIND a good one. I went through 3 before I found mine. first one just nodded and said "and how does that make you feel" like a movie character. second one was great but didn't take my insurance. third time was the charm.

any tips? what should guys look for? I feel like most therapists are set up for women and we need someone who gets how men work

Real talk — I specifically looked for a male therapist who had experience with high-stress professions. Found him through Psychology Today's directory. You can filter by specialty, gender, insurance, everything.

My biggest tip: if you don't feel comfortable by session 3, move on. It's not a marriage. You're hiring someone to help you. If they're not helping, fire them and try again.

Also — don't be afraid to interview them. I literally asked my current therapist "have you worked with men who have anger issues that might actually be depression?" and his answer told me everything I needed to know.

Great question Tom. A few evidence-based tips:

1. Look for someone trained in CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) — it has the strongest evidence base for depression and anger in men
2. Ask about their experience with male clients specifically
3. Check if they offer telehealth — removes a huge barrier for men who feel weird sitting in a waiting room
4. BetterHelp and similar platforms let you switch therapists easily if the fit isn't right

The therapeutic alliance (fancy word for how well you click with your therapist) is actually the #1 predictor of outcomes. More than the type of therapy, more than their credentials. So trust your gut.

my husband tried 4 before he found someone he liked. I know its frustrating but please dont give up. Also — some therapists do sliding scale if insurance is an issue. Just ask!
