Gut health and mental health — anyone else notice a connection?

Ok this might sound out there but hear me out. My therapist mentioned the gut-brain connection and I started paying attention to how food affects my mood. And... it's wild. When I eat like crap for a few days my anxiety ramps up noticeably. When I'm eating clean — lots of veggies, fermented foods, adequate protein — my mood is way more stable.

I know correlation isn't causation but the pattern is too consistent to ignore. Anyone else experience this? Marcus, Diane — is there actual science behind this or am I just placebo-effecting myself?

Oh Jake, you are NOT imagining this. The gut-brain axis is one of the most exciting areas of research right now. Quick summary:

- About 95% of your serotonin (the "feel good" neurotransmitter) is produced in your gut
- Your gut microbiome communicates with your brain via the vagus nerve
- Dysbiosis (unhealthy gut bacteria balance) has been linked to depression, anxiety, and even cognitive decline
- Processed foods, sugar, and alcohol can damage your gut lining and shift your microbiome toward inflammation

It's not placebo. It's biology. The research is still emerging but the direction is very clear.

Bro YES. I've been saying this to my clients for years and people looked at me like I was crazy. Now the science is finally catching up.

Practical advice: start with a quality probiotic (look for multi-strain, at least 10 billion CFU), eat fermented foods regularly (kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt), and increase fiber intake. Your gut bacteria literally eat fiber — starve them and they start eating your gut lining instead. Not ideal lol.

Also — if you're on antibiotics, your gut takes a massive hit. Always follow up with probiotics after a round of antibiotics.
