GLP-1 medications: what men specifically need to know
Quote from Diane Park on October 22, 2025, 10:00 amAs a pharmacist, I've been fielding a LOT of questions about GLP-1 receptor agonists (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, etc.) and I want to address some things that are specific to men, since most of the media coverage seems targeted at women.
Key things men should know:
1. Muscle mass preservation — This is the big one. Men typically have more lean muscle mass, and rapid weight loss from GLP-1s can cause significant muscle loss if you're not actively resistance training. This isn't optional — it's critical.
2. Testosterone interaction — Obesity suppresses testosterone. As you lose weight on GLP-1s, your T levels may actually INCREASE naturally. Some men report feeling significantly better in ways they didn't expect.
3. The Lancet data — Recent studies show cardiovascular benefits that are particularly relevant for men (who have higher baseline cardiovascular risk).
4. It's not cheating — I see so many men who won't consider these medications because they think it's "the easy way out." It's a medical tool. You wouldn't refuse blood pressure medication because it's "cheating."
Happy to answer questions. I try to keep it evidence-based but accessible.

Quote from Marcus Davis on October 22, 2025, 1:15 pmDiane, THANK YOU for point #1. I've been screaming this from the rooftops at my gym. I've had three clients go on Ozempic in the last 6 months and the ones who maintained their training kept way more muscle mass than the one who just relied on the medication alone.
My recommendation for anyone on GLP-1s: protein intake needs to go UP, not down. I'm talking 1g per pound of bodyweight minimum. And you MUST keep lifting. The scale might move slower but your body composition will be so much better.
Also — creatine. Still the most researched supplement on the planet. Helps with muscle preservation during caloric deficit. No brainer addition for anyone on these meds.

Quote from Tom Richardson on October 22, 2025, 6:30 pmwait so the testosterone thing is real?? I've been on Mounjaro for 4 months, lost about 30 lbs, and I swear I feel like a different person. more energy, sleeping better, actually want to do things again. thought it was just from losing weight but maybe its the T thing too??

Quote from Diane Park on October 23, 2025, 8:45 amTom — yes, it's very likely both! Visceral fat (the stuff around your organs) actively converts testosterone to estrogen via an enzyme called aromatase. As you lose that fat, less conversion happens, and your free testosterone rises. A 30 lb loss could absolutely move the needle on your T levels.
If you're curious, ask your doctor to check your total and free testosterone at your next visit. Would be interesting to compare to any pre-medication labs you might have.

Quote from Jake Mitchell on October 24, 2025, 11:00 amThe "it's not cheating" part is so important. I had a buddy who was 280 lbs and his doctor recommended Wegovy and he said no because he "should be able to do it himself." That's the same toxic mindset that keeps us from going to therapy. Sometimes you need tools. Tools aren't weakness.
He eventually went on it btw. Down 50 lbs and actually enjoying exercise now because his knees don't hurt anymore.
