Dealing with gym intimidation
Quote from Chris H. on December 15, 2025, 6:00 pmSigned up for a gym membership two months ago and I've gone exactly 3 times. Every time I walk in I feel like everyone is staring at the out of shape guy who doesn't know what he's doing. I know logically nobody cares but the anxiety is real.
Does this go away? Any tips for getting past this?

Quote from Jess T. on December 15, 2025, 9:00 pmHere's what nobody tells you: every single person in that gym started exactly where you are. Every jacked dude had a first day where they felt out of place. Most of them respect the hell out of beginners because they remember how hard it was to start.
Go during off-peak hours if it helps (early morning or mid-afternoon). Wear headphones. Have a written plan so you're not wandering around. And remember: you have as much right to be there as anyone else. You're paying the same membership.

Quote from Marcus J. on December 16, 2025, 7:30 amHeadphones + a program on your phone = nobody bothers you and you look like you know what you're doing even if you're watching YouTube tutorials between sets (which is totally fine btw).
Also consider a few personal training sessions just to learn the basic movements. Having confidence in your form removes like 80% of the intimidation.

Quote from Dave K. on December 17, 2025, 10:00 amSomething that helped me mentally: everyone at the gym is there because they're NOT where they want to be yet. Every single person, even the big guys. Nobody has arrived. You're all on the same journey, just at different points.
